Booting Into Safe Mode

Sometimes removal of an infection will require certain files or system services to be unused by the Operating System for successful removal of the infection to be accomplished. 

You can do this by booting into Safe Mode by using the following steps according to the Windows version that is installed on your computer.

 

Windows 7

  • When the computer is first powered on or restarted, start to tap the F8 key in short intervals. 
  • Once your computer's startup process has gone through the basic testing and splash screens, the Advanced Boot Options menu will be displayed.
  • Use the up and down arrow keys to select Safe Mode with Networking and press ENTER to then continue booting into Safe Mode.

 

Windows 8

  • With the computer powered on either at the desktop start by holding down the Windows key+C keys on your keyboard, and then click Settings.
  • Click Power, hold down Shift on your keyboard and then click Restart.
  • A new window will open with several options and you will click Troubleshoot.
  • From the Advanced Options menu click Advanced options.
  • From the Startup Settings menu click Restart.
  • After your computer reboots, press 5 on your keyboard to Enable Safe Mode with Networking.
  • Enter your username and password to start Windows in Safe Mode with Networking if prompted.

 

Windows 10

  • With the computer powered on either at the login screen or at the desktop start by clicking StartPower and then while holding down the Shift key on your keyboard and click Restart.
  • A new window will open with several options and you will click Troubleshoot.
  • The troubleshoot menu will open and you will click Advanced options.
  • From the Advanced Options menu click Startup Settings.
  • From the Startup Settings menu click Restart.
  • After your computer reboots, press 5 on your keyboard to select Safe Mode with Networking.
  • Enter your username and password to start Windows in Safe Mode with Networking if prompted.
